These are some images from the design and creation of the 'A Theory of Everything' maquette.
During 2005, I collaborated on the SMAP proposal, ‘A Theory of Everything’ with NESTA fellow Brian Duffy. Brian envisaged a public monument to Einstein at the London Science Museum, symbolising Einstein's love of visual metaphor and ‘combinatory play’ as tools to communicate complex scientific ideas. I generated virtual and physical representations of the theoretical sculpture, in the form of VRML flythroughs which were presented to the sponsors, and a rapid-prototyped maquette which was presented publicly in December 2005.
L-systems (Laurens Lapre's LParser) were used to grow a virtual model of a tree with fourfold symmetry, and translated into a modular CAD design which was built using a Fused Deposition Modeller.

We used FDM equipment in Aston University's Model Shop to rapid-prototype the maquette.

One of the modular components generated in SolidWorks. Mathematical relationships from the VRML modelling were directly used to parameterise the CAD parts. |
